Photo Enforcement Period to Begin May 1, 2018 for Eastbound/Westbound Approaches of Washington St. at Rt. 21

Gurnee, IL – The Village of Gurnee is expanding its photo enforcement program to Washington Street and Route 21 due to a high crash rate.  From 2013 - 2016 there were a total of 101 traffic crashes resulting in 38 injuries.  A 30-day warning period is scheduled to begin May 1st.  During this time, drivers who are found to violate traffic signals will be notified with a warning letter.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. on May 31st, drivers found in violation will incur a civil penalty in the amount of $100 per infraction.  This includes drivers who fail to come to a complete stop prior to making a right turn when the signal is red.

Following the warning period, civil penalties will be issued by mail to the registered owner of the vehicle who violates the traffic signal.  Points will not be added to the driver’s record, nor will insurance companies be notified.  Drivers will have an opportunity to review images and video of the violation before paying or contesting the citation.

Gurnee first launched photo enforcement in 2009 with the goal to reduce automobile-related tragedies by addressing red light violations.  The campaign seeks to re-establish respect for traffic signals in an effort to enhance the safety of residents and visitors.

Anyone with questions may contact the Gurnee Police Department’s traffic safety division at 847-599-7171, or via email: photoenforcement@police.gurnee.il.us.
