MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • United States citizen or Naturalized citizen
  • Minimum 20 years of age (21 years of age by police academy graduation date) and less than 35 years of age as of application deadline unless otherwise exempt. Military Veterans may exceed the maximum age by the number of years served on active military duty, but by no more than 10 years of active military duty.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent thereof

At least one of the following:

  • College coursework towards 60 hours of college credit; OR
  • At least 2 years United States military service; OR
  • ILETSB Basic Correctional Officer Training certification (IDOC, Federal Bureau of Prisons, or out of state corrections certifications are not accepted); OR
  • Experience as a full time sworn law enforcement officer; must be able to be certified in accordance with 50 ILCS 705/8.1

 

HIRING PROCESS

Becoming a member of the Gurnee Police Department as an entry level police officer begins with a hiring process designed to be thorough, transparent, and focused on identifying passionate individuals committed to upholding the highest standards of honor, integrity, and service. 

1. Complete the online application: Start your journey by visiting www.gurnee.il.us/jobs and filling out our comprehensive online application. This step is crucial in providing us with essential details about your background, experience, and interest in joining the Gurnee Police Department.

2. Take the Frontline National Exam: Demonstrate your aptitude and skills by scheduling and completing the Frontline National Exam at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com. Please note that the cost of the exam is the responsibility of the applicant and is non-refundable. This exam serves as an important benchmark to assess your readiness for a career in law enforcement.

3. Attend the interviews: Engage with our Civil Service Commission and meet members of the Gurnee Police Department Command Supervisory Staff during the interview process. This step provides an opportunity for us to get to know you better, assess your communication and interpersonal skills, and understand your motivations for pursuing a career with us.

4. Conditional Job Offer: Once you successfully pass the initial stages, qualified candidates will receive a conditional job offer, signifying their potential fit within the Gurnee Police Department. This offer is contingent upon the successful completion of subsequent steps in the hiring process.

5. Comprehensive Background Investigation: In the final phase of the hiring process, we conduct a thorough background investigation. This step includes a polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, medical/vision examinations, drug screen, and the Illinois Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) fitness test.
