Police Social Worker - April 2025

Summary:

The Village of Gurnee is looking for a passionate, motivated, and experienced individual who is ready to join our team in the newly created position of Police Social Worker.

Key Responsibilities: In this role, you will partner with Law Enforcement Officers to bring compassion and crisis intervention to the front lines of public safety.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Partner with Officers to respond to mental health, substance use, and crisis situations
  • Provide immediate support, de-escalation and referral services in the field
  • Review and assess all Police incident reports to determine if social service follow-up is needed
  • Provide mental health and other related training to Officers
  • Consult with department Peer Support Officers as needed to promote Officer wellness
  • Provide emergency social service assistance after working hours to Officers in the field as needed

Key attributes: The ideal Police Social Worker will be a non-sworn experienced professional who is calm under pressure and confident working alongside law enforcement. Someone that is passionate about community wellness and has the ability to work independently to follow up on cases. An organized, detail oriented individual with strong written and verbal communication skills. 

Pay Range:

The Salary range: $104,160-126,607 annually (+/- DOQ): plus, a generous benefit package including health, dental, and vision benefits, employer-paid life insurance and other ancillary benefit options. Retirement benefits through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), retirement health savings plan through Mission Square with bi-weekly Village contributions along with the option to participate in a 457(b) deferred compensation plan. Paid time of and tuition reimbursement assistance.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time, 40-hour per week, exempt position. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, with shifts generally falling between 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Flexibility is required, as evening and/or night hours will be necessary to collaborate with night shift officers, respond to critical incidents, or meet the needs of the community.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling or Psychology or related field is required 
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience, within a law enforcement agency is preferred
  • Illinois certification as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), preferred or Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
