Top Stories of 2019: #9 Union Pacific "Big Boy" Train Visits Gurnee

On Friday, July 26th the Union Pacific Big Boy Train passed through Gurnee on its “Great Race Across the Midwest”. Hundreds of spectators lined the Union Pacific tracks in Gurnee to see one of the largest steam locomotives ever made. “Big Boy” No. 4014 is one of the largest steam locomotives ever made at over 1.2 million pounds and is one of only 25 of its kind. No. 4014 was built in the 1940s to haul heavy tonnage and travel steep terrain until it was retired in 1959.
