Des Plaines River Update: 5:00 PM - Friday, September 13th

As of 5:00 p.m. on September 13th, 2019 the Des Plaines River was at level of 9.48 feet according to reporting information provided by the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS forecast indicates that levels could reach up to 11.5 feet throughout the weekend. An updated forecast is expected tonight after 9:00 p.m.

At this time the Village wants to make area residents and businesses aware of the situation and begin taking precautionary measures for properties in the floodplain. The Village does not see an immediate need to leave the area but advises residents in the floodplain to have an evacuation plan in place in the event levels continue to rise. Sandbag materials are available for residents at the Gurnee Public Works facility (1151 Kilbourne Road).

The Village will be reviewing flood forecast data and determine by 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 14th if the Village activate sandbagging operations. After this time, the Village may send out a call for volunteers to assist with sandbagging. Watch for further updates from the Village.

If you begin to have water come into your basement, please remember to take extreme caution for possible electric shock. The Village would like to urge anyone with flooded basements to contact the Village of Gurnee or ComEd to have the power disconnected prior to entering the basement. From 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday thru Friday call the Village of Gurnee at (847) 599-7550. After business hours, contact ComEd at (800) 334-7661.
